"Cohesive Wildfire Management Strategy rests on three pillars: restoring fire-adapted natural communities; building fire-adapted human communities; and responding appropriately to wildfire. These three elements form a triangle for fire protection in the WUI. Each is necessary for success; and all three sides of the triangle rest, in turn, on the jurisdictional triangle of cooperation and collaboration among local, state, and federal authorities."

The Initial IC should focus on anchor/flank/extinguish tactics for a new brush fire in the WUI environment to quickly and safely contain them with the initial alarm. The arriving BC must quickly evaluate the brush incident for the likelihood of containment and jurisdictional authority. Effectively deploying remaining units, efficiently forecasting and timely ordering of resource needs to meet incident priorities, and building an appropriate incident command structure to sustain the operation is essential for potential extended attack incidents

Day 1: LRA SRA FRA & UnIFICATION

Fundamental is knowing who is responsible for extinguishing a fire. Determining a fires location and forecasting its growth is a primary priority for the IC as this will dictate the ordering of resources, financial obligations, and command authority.

Where boundaries exist between LRA, SRA and/or FRA a Mutual Threat Zone agreement for ensuring single resource ordering, common communications and standard responses can be instituted.

DAY 2: IC1 & IC2 WUI FIRE MINDSEt

Effective deployment of incident resources to efficiently address incident objectives while ensuring accurate strategic forecasting is fundamental as an IC in the WUI environment.

The following articles highlight that mindset:

SAMPLE WUI DEPLOYMENT

Ideally, IC1 has given an Initial ROC, determined access, and begun deploying initial arriving units. This simulated fire is in LRA, simplifying ordering and authority for the fire. Utilize the toggle to explore the suggested deployment of the initial arriving units and contingencies.
